Are You the Destination… or Just a Temporary Stop Along the Way?

By Amy Andersen, Founder and CEO of Linx Dating

One of the hardest parts of dating is that, in the beginning, you simply don’t know what role you’ll play in someone else’s story.

Will you become their destination—the person they choose to build a life with?

Or are you simply a stop along the way? A meaningful chapter, a lesson, a season of growth before they continue their journey with someone else?

The truth is, there is no way to know in the early stages.

Someone can be wildly excited about you, text you constantly, introduce you to friends, make future plans, and still discover that you’re not ultimately their forever person. On the other hand, a relationship that starts quietly and steadily can become the deepest love either of you has ever known.

That’s what makes dating such an extraordinary leap of faith.

I often think of relationships like train stations. People arrive carrying different luggage- past relationships, old wounds, hopes, fears, dreams, timing, and readiness. Sometimes two people board the same train and stay together for the entire ride. Other times, one person gets off several stops earlier than expected.

It doesn’t necessarily mean the relationship failed. Sometimes it served exactly the purpose it was meant to serve. Maybe you helped someone learn to trust again. Maybe they reminded you what healthy communication feels like. Maybe they taught you where your boundaries needed strengthening.

Maybe you discovered qualities you never knew you wanted—or realized which ones you could never compromise on. Every relationship leaves us a little wiser than it found us. The mistake we often make is assigning too much meaning too early. We meet someone wonderful and immediately wonder, Is this it? Is this my person?

But perhaps a better question is:

Are we building something that deserves more time?

Because destinations aren’t declared on the first date. They’re discovered through consistency. Through character. Through how two people navigate disappointment, celebrate victories, repair conflict, and continue choosing each other when the excitement settles into something quieter but far more meaningful. Ironically, the healthiest daters don’t spend all of their energy trying to determine whether they’re someone else’s destination. They focus on whether the relationship itself is moving in that direction.

Is there mutual effort?

Growing trust?

Shared values?

Kindness?

Curiosity?

Consistency?

Those are the real signposts. If someone eventually realizes you’re not their forever person, that doesn’t diminish your worth. It simply means your paths diverged. And if you discover they’re not yours, that’s equally valuable. Dating isn’t about convincing someone to choose you. It’s about allowing enough time and enough truth for both people to discover whether they’re meant to keep traveling together.

So if you’re dating right now, give yourself permission to release the pressure of needing immediate certainty. You don’t have to know today whether you’re someone’s destination. You simply have to keep showing up authentically, paying attention to actions more than promises, and allowing time to reveal what neither person can force. Because the right relationship won’t make you wonder whether you’re just a stop along the way. Eventually, you’ll both realize you’ve arrived at the same destination.
